A Review of the Tria Laser Hair Removal System: First Treatment

The Tria Hair Removal System is an FDA-approved hair removal device for at home use. I wanted to see if Tria's claims held up after the first treatment.

The Tria Laser Hair Removal System is one of the first at-home laser hair removal kits to get approval from the FDA. This system is becoming more popular because it allows consumers to do their own laser hair removal in the privacy of their home at a fraction of the cost of a doctor’s office.

The Tria Activation Process

The process for activating the Tria is extensive but necessary. It is a miniature version of the laser that could be found in a dermatologist’s office. Everyone who buys a Tria must go through this activation process before being able to turn the device on.

How to Use the Tria System

To prepare for the first Tria treatment, first shave and dry the area to be treated. Shave as closely as possible because the laser will hurt more on skin that has been haphazardly shaved. Then, take the skin sensor and make sure that the skin to be treated is light enough. If it isn’t, the Tria laser could burn the skin, not just the hairs. Then, place the skin sensor near the “on” button of the laser to turn it on. Simply put the device to the skin and it will beep once before the laser and once after. Then move the laser so that half of it is overlapping the first section and repeat.

The Tria has Five Settings

The Tria has five settings but only three lights on the device. To understand the complicated code for each level, I had to look at the instruction booklet. It would make much more sense for Tria to simply add two more lights on the side of the device so that each light could symbolize each level.

Depending on the setting, Tria users can expect to see preliminary results after the first treatment. The lower the setting, the smaller the first results. The best way to ensure the optimum first results seems to be to use the highest setting tolerable. The bikini line though, will probably require a lower level setting than maybe an arm or leg.

The First Results are In!

Expect to see some redness for at least the day of the treatment. I did have some redness, but nothing that wearing long pants couldn’t handle. The areas that I treated were only sore for about a half hour despite some small red spots that lasted for two days.

Because hair grows cycles, it is not possible to get the desired results after just one treatment. However, after using the third setting for my first treatment, I can see visible results. If these results continue for my second and third treatments, then the Tria Hair Removal System is definitely worth its price tag.
